3 Days from Marrakech through the Desert
Marrakech is the perfect starting point to explore the Sahara Desert, offering breathtaking landscapes, Berber villages, and the magical experience of sleeping under a sky full of stars. This three-day desert tour will take you through the majestic Atlas Mountains, the iconic Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, the Dades Gorges, and the fascinating dunes of Merzouga.
Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley
Departure from Marrakech
The journey begins early in Marrakech, heading toward the High Atlas Mountains. We cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 meters / 7,415 feet), one of Morocco’s most scenic roads. Along the way, you’ll see traditional Berber villages and stunning mountain landscapes.
Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah
Our first stop is the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous fortified villages (ksar) in Morocco. This ancient adobe settlement has been featured in films and TV series such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
We explore the narrow alleys and traditional buildings with a local guide, then enjoy lunch at a restaurant with panoramic views.
Roses Valley & Dades Gorges
Continuing our journey, we pass through the Valley of Roses, famous for its Damask rose cultivation used in essential oils and cosmetics.
Next, we head toward the Dades Gorges, known for their breathtaking rock formations. We spend the night in a traditional hotel overlooking the valley, enjoying a delicious Moroccan dinner.
Day 2: Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Merzouga Desert
Todra Gorges
After breakfast, we visit the Todra Gorges, a dramatic limestone canyon with cliffs reaching 300 meters (985 feet) high. This stunning natural wonder is perfect for hiking and photography.
Heading to Merzouga & the Sahara Desert
We continue towards Merzouga, where the landscape gradually transforms from rugged mountains to golden sand dunes. By the afternoon, we arrive at the Erg Chebbi dunes, marking the gateway to the Sahara Desert.
Camel Trek & Overnight in the Desert
We swap our vehicle for camels and embark on a scenic trek through the dunes. As the sun sets over the Sahara, the shifting colors create an unforgettable experience.
Upon arrival at our desert camp, we enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner under the stars, followed by live Berber music around a campfire. We sleep in comfortable tents (jaimas), experiencing authentic Sahara hospitality.
Day 3: Merzouga – Draa Valley – Marrakech
Sunrise in the Desert & Return Camel Trek
We wake up early to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the dunes, a magical sight that’s worth the early start. After breakfast at the camp, we ride camels back to Merzouga, where we take our vehicle to begin the return journey to Marrakech.
Draa Valley & Ouarzazate
On our way, we travel through the Draa Valley, home to one of Morocco’s largest palm groves and filled with stunning oases and traditional kasbahs.
We then stop in Ouarzazate, “The Gateway to the Desert,” where we have the opportunity to visit the Atlas Film Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah.
Return to Marrakech
In the afternoon, we drive back through the High Atlas Mountains, reaching Marrakech by evening. End of the tour.
